August 26, 2007 ( Ipswich, MA)— The NAPGT’s sole woman golfer, Anna Grzebien, showed once again that she is someone to watch. In her first few months as a pro she collected her second Mass Women’s Open win last week at Ipswich Country Club in Ipswich, MA.
“I guess it kind of puts a little bit of extra pressure to defend a title than to get that first one,” she said, referring to her win at last summer’s Mass Open as a college senior.
But if Grzebien was feeling any pressure, no one could tell. She shot a fantastic eight under, 65 on the first day, ‘I just felt very confident,” Grzebien said. “You roll a putt in early, and you just kind of get on a roll.” Continue reading ‘Grzebien Brings in Second Mass Women’s Open Win’

After playing August 14, 15, and 16, 2007 at the Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn, ME, NAPGT member Todd Westfall brought home a win at the Maine Open that he narrowly missed out on three years ago. In 2004 Westfall came in second after a tie-breaking shootout ended in Shawn Warren’s favor.
“Obviously I wish I would have won three years ago,” said Westfall. “But to come back and win is a good thing—it’s refreshing.”
After Westfall’s lead-tying three under, 69 in the first round of this year’s tournament, the second round brought a scene that looked eerily familiar; his one over, 73 caused him to drop to second when none other than Warren took the lead. August 16, 2007 (Plymouth, MA)— Geoff Sisk came looking for a win and found it today during the final round of the Crosswinds Open, breezing past his competition by a margin of five strokes.
Sisk shot 71-67-68 for a total of 206, saying that after struggling with his putting during the first round, he conferred with his teacher, and worked out some of his issues. “I misread a lot of putts- I putted well, but I just misread everything,” he said.
Sisk said he knew the final round was a three man game; Rob Oppenheim and Dustin Cone were the only others under par going into the final round. “We had such a big lead over the fourth, fifth and sixth guys,” Sisk said. Continue reading ‘Sisk Breezes Past Field at Crosswinds’

August 15, 2007 (Plymouth, MA)—Rob Oppenheim, fresh off his win at the Bangor Open in Maine, and Geoffrey Sisk, still hot from his win at the Atlantic Open last month, both played two fantastic rounds of golf on a course that made many struggle. After day two of the Crosswinds Open, they are tied for the lead at six under, 138.
Sisk, at one point six under for the day, would have tied the course record that Oppenheim set only yesterday. However, his bogie on 17 reeled him back to a still impressive 67.
“You have to keep the ball in play out here,” Sisk said of the difficult course set-up. “If you get the ball not within rough lines, you could have problems; you may not find it, number one, and number two, if you do find it you may not have a swing—so the key is to obviously keep the ball somewhere within the rough line.” Continue reading ‘’07 Giants to Contend at Crosswinds Finale’

August 14, 2007 (Plymouth, MA)—The scorer’s tent was a strange mix of astonishment and relief.
Astonished by the 66 posted by Rob Oppenheim; relieved because if the cut were made today, 78, six over par, would make a check.
Thirty-four players started, and only three broke par.
This was the scene after the first round of the Crosswinds Open, where sixteen players—nearly half the field–failed to break eighty. Par had been protected by a course that forced surgical-precision off the tee, despite the perception of wide fairways. Continue reading ‘Oppenheim Leads, Sets Course Record at 66′

August 8, 2007 (Harvard, MA)—After playing on the North American Pro Golf Tour on and off for seven years, Billy Downes, of Longmeadow, MA, finally got his win.
Coming into the final round leading the pack by two strokes brought him confidence and helped him eek out a five under, 208 to become the 2007 Shaker Hills Open champion.
“It just feels good to win,” said Downes whose last brush with victory came four years ago when Geoff Sisk took first after a playoff. Continue reading ‘Billy Downes Wins his First NAPGT Championship’
